Your first visit to dentist involves thorough oral examination in order to evaluate the condition of your oral health, teeth and gums and provide you with effective treatment options that best suits you.
A new patient exam includes, panoramic x-rays, few bitewing x-rays (to detect any decay between your teeth), some individual teeth x-rays (if required). Intraoral photos, extra-oral photos (to view face profile). Once all the information gathered the dentist will recommend a cleaning /deep cleaning and a treatment plan is tailored.
During regular cleaning, you do not need any numbing, the hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler to gently loosen the plaque and calculus from your teeth, polishes and flosses. The dentist will go over the oral hygiene instructions.
In case of any mild-moderate gum disease, you may need deeper cleaning under the gum line which requires numbing.
